The Robert Anderson Memorial Award

In 2010, Amnesty International Tauranga Moana established the Robert Anderson Memorial Award to honour the contribution that its member, Robert (Bob) Anderson, had made to Peace, Human Rights and Social Justice.

Thoughts from Jean Anderson ...

I asked myself, why the Robert Anderson Memorial Award.  So many people work tirelessly for issues about which they feel passionate.  Bob tackled public speaking enthusiastically, his passion showing, yet he shunned personal attention.  Our dear friend, Elva Day, explained it beautifully, and I quote:

"Viewing our lives is like standing on the edge of a still pond where we send a flat pebble skimming over the surface, watching the ripples extend right out to the periphery, yet never able to see the depth, extent or effect of our actions.  Neither is all of this observable to others.  Those closest to us may well see and experience some of what is hidden from ourselves, but no human ever sees it all.  Just a few will have beneficially affected others to the extent that the community in which they have been involved want to establish a tangible reminder of a life that the community considers to have been well lived, beyond the norm.  Such a person was Robert (Bob) Anderson, Quaker, Scientist, Educator, Writer, Theosophist, and Trustee of Physicians and Scientists for Global Responsibility.  The community involved is Amnesty International Tauranga Moana."

Bob did not see the effect his work had, indeed often questioned its value, but I continue to be moved by people who say something that shows the "ripples" he created continue to spread.

I thank Amnesty Tauranga for acknowledging this with the Award in his name.                     (December 2012)

Bob died in December 2008 cutting short a well-lived life.  The words for "commitment to social justice, peace and human rights" are engraved on the Award and honour a man who worked tirelessly to improve the world we live in.

A student at Tauranga Girls' College designed the Award and a student at Otumoetai College Tauranga carved it from native timbers.  These reflect Bob's love of the New Zealand bush and the pleasures he found in simple things.

Bob was a Quaker and lived by the tenets of his faith. He opposed violence between people and nations, to other species and to our planet. He believed that true peace cannot be dictated; it can only be built on equality, social justice, respect, and co-operation between all peoples. He was passionate about the welfare of all beings, regardless of race or religion, with a special caring for women and children, and about the welfare of the world his generation would leave behind.  He brought this passion and his experience as a teacher to his tireless work to better that world, speaking Truth to Power.

You can’t die for the life of you!(60pp A5) – ISBN 978-0-473-13157-9

A scientific approach to survival of the human personality after death.

The Exploding the Myth of series (24pp A5) were written at the request of attendees at public talks given by Robert Anderson; the talks themselves coming about by public demand. People wanted information in simple form that they could pass among family and friends.

Exploding the Myth of Genetic Engineering - (ISBN 0-4-73-08434-1. pub 2002)

In 1998, proposals for using genetic engineering technology aroused consumer concern. They wanted information about what affects it would have on their well-being and on New Zealand. As a retired lecturer and a Trustee of the then Physicians and Scientists for Responsible Technology - now Physicians and Scientists for Global Responsibility (www.psgr.org.nz) - Robert Anderson spoke at public meetings throughout the country. Exploding the Myth of Genetic Engineering answers the questions the public asked.

Exploding the Myth of Irradiated Foods - (ISBN 0-473-08505-4, pub 2002)

The question of fresh foods being irradiated came to the fore in the early years of the 21st century. While foods that are irradiated have to be labelled their safety remains questionable for many scientists and medical professionals, and the public. Exploding the Myth of Irradiated Foods answers the most common questions asked by the public.

Exploding the Myth of Electro Magnetic Radiation - (ISBN 0-473-08505-4, pub 2002)

Professor Neil Cherry (d 2003) of Christchurch was world-renowned for his expertise on how dangerous are cell phones, power lines, microwave ovens and the host of electromagnetic devices that have become an integral part of human life. In dedicating Exploding the Myth of Electro Magnetic to Dr Cherry, Robert Anderson outlines the findings of the many scientists who ask that the precautionary principle be applied and for more attention to be paid to safety, and why.

Exploding the Myth of Vaccination written by Dr Michael Godfrey and Robert Anderson PhD - (ISBN 0-473-08673-5, pub 2002)

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate is a question asked by many parents. Their decision is made harder by conflicting evidence, much of it misleading. Exploding the Myth of Vaccination provides some of facts coming to light on the issue and asks has vaccination improved human health.

Exploding the Myth of Fluoridation and Amalgam written by Dr Michael Godfrey and Robert Anderson PhD - (ISBN 0-476-00223-0, pub 2003)

For decades public drinking water supplies have been fluoridated and children’s teeth filled with mercury amalgam with the claim of preventing dental decay. Fluoride and mercury amalgam are toxic. Exploding the Myth of Fluoridation and Amalgam asks to poison or not to poison.

Exploding the Myth of Cheap Oil, remaking our lives after Peak Oil - (ISBN 0-473-10917-4, pub 2006)

Substantial oil discoveries peaked in the 1960s. ‘Peak Oil’ is the end of cheap oil and the decline of world oil supplies. This peak in oil supplies is said to have occurred around the turn of the century. It has been shown mathematically that even if Earth’s entire sphere were full of oil there would only be enough for about three centuries at the current rate of usage. Usage continues to grow annually and the mathematics of growth show usage numbers become astronomically large in modest periods of time. Exploding the Myth of Cheap Oil, remaking our lives after Peak Oil looks at the problem and some ways in which it may be overcome.

Exploding the Myth of Nanotechnology - (ISBN 978-0-473-12424-3, pub 2007)

Nanotechnology refers to techniques used to engineer structures, materials and systems that operate at a scale of 100 nano-metres (nm) or less, a size that is invisible to the naked eye. One nm is one billionth of a metre, a human hair about 80,000 nm. Developments in this new technology operate largely in a regulatory vacuum and safety testing is not compulsory. Exploding the Myth of Nanotechnology looks at the results of studies and asks are there potential risks and/or benefits to this new technology?

New Zealand July 2010

A dozen years ago, Robert (Bob) Anderson heard about genetically engineered crops being planted, largely in the US, but also in Canada and South America.  Applications for Approval were proposed for New Zealand.  Research suggested such transgenic crops were not the panacea developers and proponents claimed.  This set Bob and his wife, Jean, on a journey that became a passion:  exhausting and exhilarating, and everything in between.  It brought them many wonderful friendships, one of which was the new husband of their dear friend, Pauline.  Colin Addison had worked in the alternative health sector since the 1980s and did not need the dots connected to see the fuller picture.  He and Pauline gave continuous support to Bob and Jean.

It is a fact that the combined efforts of many New Zealanders has restricted the planting of transgenic crops to confined facilities (onions and brassicas) and to defined areas (trees), and also restricted the number of genetically engineered foods and food additives approved for use in New Zealand.  New Zealand has approved the use of transgenic horse influenza vaccines should the need for them arise, and pig DNA is being experimented with as part of a drug for diabetes.  A proposed introduction is transgenic perennial ryegrass, currently being developed in Australia, and possibly other pasture grasses in the future.  Experiments on animals to produce, for example, pharmaceutical products, are well into a second decade with questionable results.  Experiments in other areas continue in laboratory confinement.  There remains strong opposition to the applications of genetic engineering in New Zealand, among scientists and medical professionals, and the public.

It is impossible to tackle one issue without others overlapping or leading to more.  For example, nanotechnology, synthetic biology and geo-engineering followed from genetic engineering.  Bob spoke and wrote about irradiated foods, electromagnetic radiation, climate change and peak oil.  Not one to sit idle, he also tackled environmental, health and social justice issues, and what may be covered by the question, Why are we here?

From its inception, Bob was a Trustee of Physicians and Scientists for Responsible Genetics; since 2008 known as Physicians and Scientists for Global Responsibility, www.psgr.org.nz.  He authored The Final Pollution:  Genetic Apocalypse, an overview of genetic engineering and its implications, and The Ultimate War Crime, looking at the effects on people and the environment of using depleted uranium in weapons of war.  At the public’s request, he wrote the Exploding the Myth of series, which includes Genetic Engineering, Irradiated Foods, Electromagnetic Radiation, Nanotechnology and Peak OilExploding the Myth of Vaccination and Fluoridation and Amalgam were written with Michael Godfrey MBBS, Medical Director of the Bay of Plenty Environmental Health Clinic.  His final book was a scientific look at death and the survival of the human personality; You can’t die for the life of you!

Sadly, Pauline died in 2005 and Bob in 2008.  Jean continues the work she and Bob did together, and in 2009 Colin’s business, The Blase Company, offered to sponsor a web site as a vehicle for the work of Bob and others speaking truth to power.  Thus CONNECTED was born.
